At the base of the Andes Mountains, in a remote landscape, Patarate House replaces an aging log cabin with a full-time dwelling for a couple choosing to live year-round in this challenging setting. Designed to improve thermal performance and tailored to the couple’s specific needs — including a kitchen crafted for their way of cooking and living — the project uses a prefabricated cross-laminated timber structure and insulated wall panels. All elements are delivered as a kit of parts, enabling anticipated short building timeframes despite the site’s difficult access. Currently under construction, the house is designed to be warm, durable, and deeply connected to its mountain surroundings.
