ABOUT

The practice started in 2016 and was formally founded in 2017 by Claudio Torres, Clara Reutter, Yuji Harada, and Emile Straub. Operating as a collaborative platform across Australia, Chile, and Japan, the office works on a diverse range of projects at the intersection of architecture, environment, and construction.

The ambition is to create architecture that is simple to construct and responsive to its climate. We believe buildings should function as flexible infrastructures—capable of future iterations and uses while maintaining a high level of environmental performance. The architecture emphasizes structural economy and construction logic, often focusing on transforming existing spaces and using low-carbon materials to support longevity in the building industry.

STUDIO

The studio specialises in architecture and landscape architecture, with a particular focus on climate-responsive residential projects for private clients. The practice has delivered a range of built work in Chile—with a recent focus on the delivery and construction of mass timber projects—and has partnered with emerging practices in Australia to deliver medium-scale projects. Whether delivering a full-scale residence or an incremental renovation, the approach remains focused on landscape integration and the exploration of circular, low-carbon materials to ensure long-term value and comfort.

RESEARCH

In 2016, the research practice was awarded 1st place in the YAP Constructo (Young Architects Program) in Santiago, a program affiliated with MoMA NY. Further, the office was nominated for the MCHAP.emerge by the Illinois Institute of Technology in 2018 and, most recently in 2024, received the Archi-Neering Design Award in Japan for excellence in the integration of architecture and engineering. In parallel to the studio, an involvement in the academic discourse through design-led inquiry is important.

They have lectured at universities internationally, including the University of Melbourne, UC Chile, and the Yokohama Graduate School of Architecture (Y-GSA). Their work is published in international journals and magazines such as GA Japan, Inflection, and, most recently, a feature in Shinkenchiku (2025) on pavilion relocation. Internationally, Ephemeral's work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York as part of Constructo’s curation, was a finalist in the TAB Estonia Installation Programme in 2019, and was shortlisted for the exhibition Tilling Landscape curated by Hiroko Keiya and Jin Motohashi at the Venice Biennale 2025.
